Vitamins and Minerals for Health and Well-being

In an ideal world vitamin and mineral supplements would not be necessary, however, since the world is a
long way short of ideal, it is necessary to add vitamin and mineral supplements to the diet. Although food
may appear fresh when you look at the pristine presentations in your downtown supermarket, the vegetables and fruit
you are looking at have been disconnected from their life source for weeks, and in some cases much longer.

Organically Produced Food As a result, the vitamin content may be zero, and the mineral content may
be a cause for concern, for if the produce has been grown on overworked depleted soils heavily dosed with
superphosphates, it may not offer you much in the way of vitamins and minerals, so vitamin and mineral
supplements would definitely be needed to replace the missing minerals and vitamins.Food as Medicine
Unfortunately a number of countries are already using genetically modified
seeds, and others appear to be following mindlessly along. No studies have been done to test the long
term effects of the consumption of crops grown from GM seeds.
Many soils are contaminated with heavy metals and pesticide residues, studies have shown that commercially
grown broccoli often has a high cadmium content. Because of broccoli's ability to pull cadmium from the soil, it
has been used in a process called phytomediation whereby farmers grow crops of broccoli to clean up contaminated
soil. The cadmium contamination comes with the use of phosphate fertilizer, some sources of phosphate rock are very
heavily contaminated with cadmium, and that is added to the soil to grow our vegetables! It's hard to believe that
there is an allowable level of cadium residue to be present in our vegetables, just like the RDA for vitamins!
Vitamin supplements are a necessity for we can no
longer depend on supermarket vegetables to supply our vitamins and minerals. The post harvest practice of
irradiating fruit and vegetables guarantees that your vegetables and fruit can live on the supermarket shelves for
extended periods, and still look fresh, however, as for vitamins and minerals , it's extremely doubtful that a
vitamin or mineral of any kind would survive the effects of high doses of ionizing radiation in the
form of gamma rays from Cobalt-60, X-rays or electron beams.

Radura, this is the logo which is supposed to be displayed on the produce you buy, unfortunately not all
irradiated produce has this label, so there is no way for the consumer to know without it. The rapidly
expanding global market places increasing demands on the local grower to compete with much cheaper produce
from overseas, so quality of produce is sacrificed for quantity, and vitamins and minerals become a distant
dream.
You may have often heard about how many servings of fresh fruit and vegetables per day you should be
consuming, but if the vegetables have been grown from irradiated seeds, sprayed with pesticides during their
growing stage ,then irradiated after harvesting, are they really good for us? Where are the vitamins and minerals
for our health and wellness?
