To understand this lets look at the function of this:

Vitamin C is involved in a variety of biochemical reactions, including detoxification and inflammation processes, white blood cell production, the reduction of glutathione, and the metabolism and protection of several other nutrients. Vitamin C prevents free radical damage through it's antioxidant activity.

Why do you need Vitamin C when taking Glutathione?

Glutathione is a tripeptide derivative of amino acids that are Glutamic acid, Glycine & Cystein.

It exists in both reduced and oxidized (GSH & GSSG) forms functioning in various REDOX reactions including Destruction of peroxides & free redicals. This function is especially important for keeping the cell membranes of RBCs stable, as Glutathione is present there in its reduced form. It also functions as a COFACTOR for many enzymes & as a detoxificating agent (antioxidant). It is also involved in the formation & maintenance of disulfied bonds in proteins & in transport of Amino acids across the cell membranes.

Vitamin C is essential in helping glutathione to retain more of its active constituents and at the same time flush out some of the glutathione which may be oxidized and become insoluble in the process. Vitamin C prevents glutathione from being oxidized and also helps it to effectively pass through the intestine into cells making it more effectively absorbed by the body.

Why do you need Vitamin C when taking Glutathione?

Glutathione with Vitamin C is a combination of two of the body's premier antioxidant nutrients that are also its premier antitoxins. Reduced glutathione, a thiol antioxidant nutrient, is a major water-phase antioxidant inside the cell, while Vitamin C (ascorbate) is a major water-phase antioxidant outside the cell.

ASCORBIC ACID (Vitamin C) primarily act as an ANTIOXIDANT in the tissues helping (along with other antioxidants such as Vitamin A & E) the maintenance of normal Wear & Tear processes with prevention to tissue injury from various toxic oxidation products formed in the body, hence commonly called "SCURVY preventing factor" which is a condition associated with Anemia & disorders of gums and skin.

Studies have shown that high doses of Vitamin C help in protecting against Cancer, Hypertension, & Coronary Atherosclerosis (a cardiac vascular disorder).

In contrast to some animals & plants the "human body" can not make this Acid by itself & is therefore ESSENTIAL to be taken in diet, that's why it is called a VITAMIN for human beings.

A study reported that taking 500 mg of Vitamin C a day increased blood concentrations of glutathione by 50%. But, increasing the dosage to 2,000 mg only raised the blood levels of glutathione levels by another five percent. Glutathione is the most abundant antioxidant found in your body, and in high concentration makes your skin white.
