With its approval for use in food, aspartame is the most controversial food additive and the most contested in the FDA records.
The artificial sweetener was approved, not on scientific grounds, but because of strong financial and political pressures. Aspartame was formerly listed by the Pentagon as a biochemical warfare agent.
Aspartame is put up for sale with brand names like NutraSweet, Canderel and now AminoSweet. Some people say that it has been causing devastation with people's health for the past 30 years.

Aspartame can be identified in well over 6,000 foods, including table-top sweeteners, vitamins, diet and diabetic foods, chewing gum, sweets, breakfast cereals, soft drinks, jams, prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
The sales blurb on aspartame is to cause people to believe that it is a harmless, totally natural sweetener, made from two amino acids that are necessary for health and are in the diet already. People are led to think it gives all the benefits of sugar, but without any negative aspects.
There have been more reports to the FDA concerning aspartame reactions than for entirely all other food additives combined. The toxicity of aspartame is not well-known by doctors in general and the symptoms can imitate some other common health ailments.
It is thought that two-thirds of side results of the sweetener are neurological. According to researchers, eating large amounts of aspartame can affect:

Endocrine balances.
A private person, Vanessa Brown, fed 108 rats with the amount of aspartame contained in an 8oz can of diet soda, over a period of 2 years and 8 months. 37% of the females developed massive sized tumours.
The plant Stevia, a healthy and natural alternative for a food sweetener, is a hundred times sweeter than sugar and has little or no calories at all. However, it may leave a slightly bitter after taste, unless used in particular ways.
