Humans are made up of cells, these cells have specific functions. Over time these cells become damaged and when these cells are damaged the organs they make fail to function. This damage is mostly caused by free radicals. A free radical is an atom that has an odd number of electrons in its outer ring.

When an atom has an odd number of electrons that means that one electron is unpaired making it unstable. Since the atom is unstable it steals electrons from another atom causing a chain reaction. Free radicals steal an electron and break down another molecule such as loose protein, sugars, or fatty acids. A free radical can steal an electron from protein that can contain a strand of collagen, which then causes a break in the collagen strand. Over years a strand of collagen stops functioning and loses its elastic quality. Concluding to skin beginning to sag and age this damage continues over years.

Unprotected sun exposure, pollution, polyunsaturated fatty acids, normal chemical processes that the body performs,  and products that produce free radicals when applied to the skin are all creators of free radicals.

Ultraviolet radiation in sunlight is one of the biggest reasons the skin ages prematurely. The skin wrinkles from the UV rays. Free radicals break down the collagen in the skin which causes it to sag and wrinkle. Skin collagen is what we need to keep are skin soft and looking young.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids are another cause of free radical damage. Avoiding all margarines and vegetable oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids such as safflower, sunflower, corn, soy, and canola oil will reduce free radicals. Fried foods are rich in these oils. Low dietary intake will help reduce the free radicals.

Producing and using energy creates free radicals. Chemical processes such as metabolizing food uses energy producing  free radicals. Any sort of muscle use such as breathing also creates free radicals. All of these free radicals damage the components the skin is made out of. This is because the skin atoms are stealing electrons to make the atom stable. Thousands of cells are exposed to free radicals daily. This results in the skin aging faster.

A healthy body can handle free radicals. If the immune system is weak it can not handle the free radicals. Damage can then occur if your body is weak and can not handle the free radicals. Damage to organs, cancer, and diseases can result if the body’s immune system is weak.

Stopping free radical damage you need enough antioxidants in your system. Antioxidants can be found in vegetables and fruits that are rich in Vitamin A, E, and Beth-carotene. .
