The funniest question I ever encountered when it came to diet and nutrition is where to find live enzymes. I was laughing so hard, it was such a ridiculous question. It gets even more ridiculous when some enterprising individuals actually sell products with "live" proteolytic enzymes on the labels.
Where do you find these? Live? Well, for one thing they are alive and well and are naturally produced by the living animal body, and that includes the human body. They could also be found in plants such as fruits and vegetables. They remain alive in these for about 72 hours after they are harvested, more than enough time to reach the fresh produce section at the grocery.
Enzyme therapy has captured the attention of a lot of individuals, especially those who have gastrointestinal disorders like IBS, leaky gut syndrome; chronic stomach upsets food intolerance and allergies. One of the better accepted therapies for these conditions is the take enzyme supplements. However, most doctors do not really recommend the prepared forms and usually reserve those for more severe cases like in post operative recovery, cancer patients, dialysis patients, and for those who have severe injuries from accidents. Depending on the severity, they would recommend the tablets or injectable forms of these proteolytic enzymes.
Live enzymes are what are essential for the body, they are not produced dead, and neither do they die easily. In fact, when the enzyme is done with its job it just turns the other way to look for more proteins and antigens to break down.
These enzymes are essential in the body, to the point that a lack of them will make a body slowly to starve and to die even if there is food and nutrients placed inside it. The enzymes found in the mouth, stomach acids and intestines all break down the foods into their necessary components so that the body could easily absorb everything that it needs to survive. What is more, the food that we eat like fresh fruits and vegetables also provide more of the enzymes and aid the digestion even more.
Enzymes are so versatile that they can be ingested whole and they get inside and function whole. They can cross the intestinal barrier and attack the pathogens, toxins, antigens, bacteria, viruses, and even parasites. There are specific enzymes designed for each specific target, and they do it when they are alive.
The enzymes balancing the body from within also ensures that the musculoskeletal system is provided all the energy and nutrients it needs, proteins, to make it recover quickly in case of injuries, they also prevent inflammation and allergies.
These enzymes, however, are not found in the GI tract of a newborn infant and the only way to get the live enzymes into the immature gut of the infant is through the colostrum in mother's milk, not from cow's milk or any other milk substitute, unless there is a problem with lactose intolerance. The infant will get these enzymes from the mother through her milk for the next two years before their gut fully matures and eventually produces their own.
