Researchers at Queensland's Brain Institute, are studying the effects of vitamin D deficiency, on the brain development of the unborn baby. Using an animal study, the research team of four, led by Dr Darryl Eyle, have found that:"Over the past four years we've been able to show that low vitamin D intake in animals during pregnancy results in offspring with brain abnormalities similar to those seen in patients with schizophrenia."

The researchers are now studying blood spots taken from infants at birth, these blood spots are provided by the Statens Serum Institute in Copenhagen. These blood spots, along with the ongoing medical record of each infant, have been kept by the institute since 1981.

The team intend to study 2000 Danish blood spots, 1000 cases, and 1000 controls. "If we establish the link in this huge patient cohort, we will be able to show that having low maternal vitamin D does not necessarily mean a child is going to develop schizophrenia but, if a child has a particularly vulnerable genome, the low maternal vitamin D may be the environmental trigger," Dr Eyles said.
